How to install and play 'ZDoomZ':

Guide last updated on 26th August 2005.  Email me if this guide is out of date

What is it?
ZDoomZ is a port of the Doom engine to Palm/Zodiac. It's a free open source poject that is upgraded now and again. It allows you to play both Doom I and Doom II as well as many mods for both. Once installed, its very easy to update. But the first time may need a bit of explanation.

Why do I want it?
Well, its simply Doom on your palm! Its free, open source, and fun. Doom is a very popular brand, and with Doom 3 out now, it's still fun to revisit the originals!

What do I need to run it?
The usual. A Palm, FileZ (a good free file manager for Palm) an SD card, and an SD card reader. Like ZQuake, its good to have the original PC copy of Doom/Doom 2 for you to legally use it, otherwise you have to suffice with the demo .wad files. If you dont have an SD card reader, you can just use the .mp3 trick to get the necessary files to your SD card. (Rename the ending of your files to .mp3, then u can sync it to the device becuase the zodiac thinks its a music track. Once on, track it down, and move it with 'FileZ' to the appropriate location, see below for more details)

How do I install it?

1. Download the latest version of ZDoomZ here : http://www.metaviewsoft.de/en/Software/PalmOS/Freeware/ZDoomZ/zdoomz.zip
2. Open the 'zdoomz.prc' and select to install it on the internal or SD card (This is only the launcher file, which is less than 100kb, so its easiest to install on Internal)
3. Hotsync the device to get the files to the Zodiac

4. Once Hotsynced, ZDoomZ will appear on your device. Simply move it to where you want it.
5. Open it to make sure that it installed properly. Also, opening it will create the 'ZDoomZ' folder on the SD card.
6. Now, plug the SD card reader into your PC, and insert one of your SD cards.

7. Navigate through 'PALM', 'Programs', and in there should be a folder called 'ZDoomZ'. At the moment there will be nothing in that folder. (If the folder is not there, make it!)
8. Inside the ZDoomZ ZIP that you downloaded, there will be a file called 'zdoomz.zdk'. Place that file inside the 'ZDoomz' folder on the SD card.
9. Now place the various .wad files for Doom in that folder, if you purchased Doom 2 from Tapwave, just locate that doom2.wad file, since it's the same .wad as with the PC version. Just place it into the 'ZDoomZ' folder with the .zdk file.

10. Place the SD card back into your palm, and open ZDoomz.
11. There should now be a file showing up in the window. However, to get the sounds, you need 'Timidity'
NOTE:: Only Install Timidity if you haven't done before, it is used for both ZDoomZ and ZHexen, so there is no need to install it twice!
12. Close ZHexen and go to: http://yoyofr92.free.fr/Timidity/index.html to download the latest version.
ZODIAC INSTALLATION:
Once its downloaded, open the zip file and open 'ZodiacSetup.exe', set it to install onto the SD card. This Hotsync will take a while since its quite a big file. Once its copied across, open the SD card on the zodiac and run the 'Timidity Installer' program thats there, click to install it, which will once again take quite a while. Once its installed you can delete the installer program from the card.
PALM INSTALLATION:
Install the TimInstall.prc on your device. Put timidity.zip in /PALM/Programs/Timidity (on your SD card) and launch TimInstall. You'll need about 20Mb of free space, so check before!
13. Now, open ZDoomz, set up the controls:
RECOMMENDED ZODIAC CONTROLS:
UP - Joystick up
DOWN - Joystick down
LEFT - Joystick left
RIGHT - Joystick right
RUN - Green

14. Click 'Launcher' and then go to 'Options' and select if you want it in portrait or landscape and if you want the sounds/music on.
